What is a Via Ferrata?
Before we get started, lets talk about what a Via Ferrata is. A Via Ferrata, Italian for “iron path,” is a protected climbing route found in mountainous regions. It consists of a steel cable running along the route, fixed to the rock every few feet. Climbers use harnesses, carabiners, and other climbing equipment to secure themselves to the cable, making it accessible to non-expert climbers.
Via Ferrata routes typically involve climbing on steel rungs, crossing suspension bridges, and navigating rock faces.
NRocks is noteworthy for being the second Via Ferrata ever designed and built in the United States!
Other Via Ferratas in the United States:
- Telluride Via Ferrata, Colorado: Offers stunning views of Bridal Veil Falls and the town of Telluride.
- Mount Norquay Via Ferrata, Banff National Park: Features 5 different routes of varying difficulty with breathtaking views of the Canadian Rockies.
- Ausable Chasm Adventure Trail Via Ferrata, New York: A unique Via Ferrata with cable bridges, a cargo net climb, and edge walks, all fully guided and inaccessible from any other trail.
- Taho Via Ferrata, California: Taho Via Ferrata offers a unique climbing experience with cable bridges, iron rungs, and stunning alpine views, all fully guided and perfect for adventurers of all skill levels.
Getting Started At Nrocks Via Ferrata
Booking and Arrival
Ticket Prices
- Adult: $150
Address
- NRocks: 141 Nelson Gap Road, Circleville, WV 26804
We booked our tickets online a week in advance, which was smooth and hassle-free. On arrival, the friendly staff at the front desk made sure we had our waivers filled out (we filled them out online when we booked our tickets) and let us know that we were still waiting on a couple of people. They then provided us with essential information, including bathroom locations, how to access the Wi-Fi, and made sure we brought everything we needed (backpack, sunblock, water, and snacks). We had just enough time to prepare our hydration backpacks and use the facilities before the rest of our group arrived.
Gearing Up
Once everyone was there, our guides took us outside to gear up. We were fitted for our helmets, harnesses and were given a thorough safety briefing. After we were all fitted we started to make our way to the Via Ferrata.
The NRocks Via Ferrata Experience
Getting To The Start Of Nrocks Via Ferrata
To get to the start of the Via Ferrata you have to hike on a gravel road. This hike is relatively short but you’ll be hiking up an incline. This part can be tiring and challenging for some. Do your best and keep with it, it’s over before you know it and then the fun begins.
The Climb
The climb itself starts on a wall equipped with metal rungs. As you go on, the metal rungs start to get further apart and are even absent for some parts of the climb. These areas require careful foot and hand placement. As someone who is 5’5″, I found some stretches challenging because my feet couldn’t reach where everyone else put their feet, but our guide was incredibly helpful, offering tips, encouragement, and flat-out telling me where to put my feet. If you are on the shorter side, know there is a foot and hand placement for you, you’ll just have to look for it.
The entire climb at NRocks covers 3.5-5 hours and ascends 1085 feet. Our group completed it in about 4 hours.
While you are climbing, don’t forget to take in the view. The view and rock fins peaking above the trees are absolutely stunning.
Suspension Bridge
One of the highlights of this Via Ferrata is the suspension bridge that runs between 2 rock fins. The Nelson Rocks suspension bridge is 150 feet off the ground and a whopping 200 feet long. I didn’t know I was scared of it until I saw it in person. That being said, once you’re on it, it feels pretty sturdy. It does sway but it’s not bad, I promise. This bridge is both thrilling and a bit nerve-wracking. Keep in mind, if you are afraid of heights the unevenly spaced boards of the NRocks Via Ferrata suspension bridge make it so that you have to look down.
Optional Summit Climb
After the bridge, there’s an optional climb to the very top. The metal rungs are further apart here, making it more challenging. While I opted out because of the bigger distance between the rungs, my son, who is also 5’5″, took on the challenge and loved it despite the difficulty in finding footing at times.
If you choose to do the optional climb, I recommend that you be one of the first people to go up. They seemed to get more rest time. My husband and son went last and while they had a little break at the top of the climb, once they were down, they had to hurry and catch up to the rest of the group. The people who went first got a short break after their climb back down. And trust me by this point you are exhausted, so the longer break you can get the better.
The Descent and Return
Once the climbing part is over, there’s a bit more hiking to do. Some of the hike is uphill and some of it is downhill, either way at this point you will be exhausted and it will seem challenging. However, the hike is short lived. We ended our adventure at a picnic area, where we waited for a ride back to the welcome center.
NRocks Via Ferrata isn’t easy but the sense of achievement and the beautiful views make it worthwhile. My family can’t wait to take on more Via Ferratas.
Escape Routes
NRocks Via Ferrata has a couple of escape routes along the Via Ferrata. If you’re ever feeling scared, too tired, or simply don’t want to continue for any reason, you can exit at one of these points. The guides are very vocal about letting everyone know when they are at an exit point. If someone wishes to exit, they will communicate with someone to come get you and show you where to meet them.
