Why Walk the Famous New River Gorge Bridge?
This isn’t just any bridge—it’s the third-highest bridge in the United States and the longest single arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere. Walking just under the bridge on a narrow catwalk gives you a view you won’t get from above. It’s a unique way to see the intricate details and features of the bridge. Plus, the Bridge Walk New River Gorge is the only way to experience the midst of the massive iron structure with such an up-close view.

What to Expect on Your Bridge Walk New River Gorge
When you arrive at the Bridge Walk Headquarters, your guide will greet you and tell you where to wait. Once everyone for the tour has arrived, you’ll get your safety harness, and the guide will walk you through how to put it on correctly. Once everyone’s suited up, you’ll hop on a little white bus for a short ride to the north side of the bridge.
When the bus drops you off, you’ll walk down a short path that leads to a locked fence at the catwalk. Here, your guide will unlock the gate, and one by one, you’ll be secured to the catwalk’s safety cable. It’s important to be next to your group when this happens, as once you’re connected, there’s no changing positions along the way.
You’ll walk in single file along the 24″ wide catwalk, with your guide sharing all kinds of interesting facts about the bridge’s construction and history. I’m not usually into history, but learning about the building of the bridge was surprisingly fascinating.
There’s a spot where you can sit on the catwalk and dangle your feet over the edge. It was a blast! My group loved it—we sat there for a while, watching the whitewater rafters below. It’s definitely one of those picture-perfect moments, but be careful with your phone! I was so nervous about dropping my phone, I barely took any photos. They sell phone lanyards at the gift shop, but just a heads up—it blocked part of my camera lens. It didn’t work for me, but it worked for my daughter.
What Makes This Tour Special?
Perfect for All Ages
This tour is suitable for almost anyone—kids as young as 8, adults of all ages, and even those who aren’t extreme sports enthusiasts. The Bridge Walk New River Gorge is easy to complete, thanks to the short path and secure cable system. Even if you’re not into heights, the safety harness and substantial railings make it feel more secure than you might expect.
We had a older couple in our tour group, and they did great!
Fascinating History
As you walk, your guide will tell you everything there is to know about the New River Gorge Bridge, from the completion of its construction in 1977 to how many screws are in the bridge. If you’re a fan of local history, architecture or just love learning new things, this will be right up your alley.
Best Time to Visit the Bridge Walk New River Gorge
The Bridge Walk is available year-round, but I highly recommend visiting in the spring or fall. The weather is perfect for walking, and the scenery? Absolutely stunning, especially in the fall when the trees start to change colors.
If you happen to be in the area on the third Saturday of October, you’ll get to see one of the largest extreme sports events in the U.S.—BASE jumping from the top of the bridge during Bridge Day. Even if you’re just watching, it’s a sight you won’t forget.
Our guide said that on Bridge Day, base jumping from the bridge happens every 30 seconds. There are more than 400 base jumpers every year.

Can I take photos during the Bridge Walk?
Yes! You can stop to take photos along the way, but be careful not to drop your phone. They sell lanyards in the gift shop that help secure your phone—just make sure it doesn’t block your camera lens.
What should I wear for the Bridge Walk?
Comfortable shoes and weather-appropriate clothing are key. The walk isn’t strenuous, but you’ll be outside, so dress for the elements. I recommend a raincoat. It rains a lot there.

You can definitely go solo, but it’s more fun with friends or family. Make sure you’re next to your group when getting clipped into the cable, as there’s no switching spots once you’re secured.
