This comprehensive guide is filled with tips and insights that will help you make the most of your own experience at Hanging Lake. So, let’s dive right in and uncover the beauty and excitement of this remarkable destination.
About Hanging Lake
Hanging Lake is a natural wonder and a must-see for anyone who loves the outdoors. This hidden gem is located in the White River National Forest in Colorado and has some unique features that set it apart from anything you’ve ever seen before.
The formation of Hanging Lake was due to a geologic fault that led to the separation of the lake bed from the valley floor situated above. As time passed, the continuous flow of water over Bridal Veil Falls resulted in the accumulation of dissolved carbonates, gradually constructing the delicate edge of the lake.
The highlight of Hanging Lake is the lake itself. Its turquoise colors are absolutely breathtaking. It truly is as blue as it looks in all of the pictures. The hues of the lake are a result of carbonate minerals dissolving in the water.
Hanging Lake is fed by a spectacular waterfall, Spouting Rock, which is another unique feature of Hanging Lake. Spouting Rock is pretty incredible as the water seems to magically burst out from the rock and eventually makes its way to Hanging Lake.
Spouting Rock can’t be seen from Hanging Lake. If you want to see Spouting Rock you’ll have to get back on the trail and follow it further up the mountain. I highly recommend that you see both Hanging Lake and Spouting Rock.
In 2011 the Secretary of the Interior named Hanging Lake a National Natural Landmark because of its many unique features.

Hanging Lake trail is a relatively short hike that immerses you in the natural beauty of Glenwood Canyon. To begin this hike follow the Glenwood Canyon Recreation Path, a paved path that leads you from the parking lot to the hanging lake trailhead.
Once you reach the trailhead, the adventure truly begins and you’ll be greeted with a steep incline. Towards the top of the incline, you’ll stumble across some pretty large rocks that you’ll have to navigate. This can be tricky if the rocks are icy. We went the first week of April and people kept warning us about the rocks because they were icy. Thankfully, we were able to get over them without any special equipment.
The trail winds its way through a beautiful and fragile ecosystem, it’s important to tread lightly, stay on the trail and respect the surroundings. As you make your way up the path, you’ll encounter several wooden bridges that cross sparkling streams.
I found myself looking down a lot to watch where I stepped. So, remember to stop and take in the views often. Parts of the trail offer stunning views of the surrounding landscape, showcasing the rugged canyon walls and the bottom of Glenwood Canyon.
To reach the lake, about a mile in you’ll find steep stairs made of rock with a handrail. While they can be challenging, they are manageable for most hikers. However, if you’re hiking with young children, it’s important to exercise caution and ensure their safety on the stairs.
Once you’ve conquered the stairs, you’ll be rewarded with the breathtaking sight of Hanging Lake. The crystal-clear turquoise waters and cascading waterfalls create a scene of natural beauty that will leave you in awe. Take some time to absorb the tranquility and appreciate the delicate ecosystem that surrounds you.
If you have some extra time and energy, consider taking a short offshoot from the main trail. This additional path leads you to Spouting Rock, a waterfall where the water bursts out of the cliffside.
You’ll see a sign for Spouting Rock just before you see Hanging Lake.
The entire hike is relatively short, but it has a steep incline, and if you are not acclimated to the altitude it can be quite challenging. We were not acclimated to it and found ourselves drinking a lot of water and taking breaks often. If you are like us, remember to take your time. This was an unforgettable experience.
What To Pack For Hiking Hanging Lake
When preparing for your visit to Hanging Lake, it’s important to pack appropriately to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. Here are some essential items you should consider bringing:
- Hiking Shoes: Since the Hanging Lake trail is steep and rocky in places, it’s recommended to wear sturdy and comfortable hiking shoes or boots to provide support and traction.
*We love Columbia shoes & boots but hike in what your feet find most comfortable. - Water: It’s important to stay hydrated throughout your hike, so bring plenty of water, especially if you’re visiting during the warmer months. We prefer using hydration backpacks over water bottles.
- Snacks: To keep your energy levels up, bring some lightweight and high-energy snacks such as granola bars, trail mix, or fruit.
- Sun Protection: Don’t forget to protect your skin from the sun by wearing sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses.
- Layered Clothing: The temperature at Hanging Lake can vary depending on the time of day and the season, so bring layered clothing that you can adjust as needed.
*We visited in early April. The ground level was hot and there was no sign of snow. However, the higher we climbed the colder, snowier, and icier it got. So, definitely know the weather. - Camera: The natural beauty of Hanging Lake and the surrounding area is a sight to behold, so bring a camera or smartphone to capture the memories.
*I use a Canon Rebel, my husband prefers his phone. - Insect Repellent: Mosquitoes and other insects can be present, especially during the summer months, so it’s recommended to bring insect repellent.
By packing these essentials and any other items you may need, you’ll be well-prepared for your visit to Hanging Lake and able to fully enjoy the stunning scenery and natural wonders of this beautiful area.

However, it can also be crowded during this time. In the fall, the temperatures start to cool down and the crowds begin to thin out. In the winter, the trail can become icy and snowy and can close due to bad trail conditions. Spring can be a good time to visit as well, but the trail can be muddy and slippery from snowmelt.
- Crowds: Hanging Lake is a popular destination, so if you prefer fewer crowds, it’s recommended to visit during the fall or spring months. During the summer, weekends can be especially crowded, so consider visiting during the weekdays or early morning if possible.
- Hiking Conditions: The trail is steep and rocky in places, so it’s recommended to visit when the trail conditions are good. Tips For Hiking Hanging Lake
Plan ahead: Make sure to plan your trip in advance by reserving your permit and checking the weather conditions. Consider visiting during the weekdays or early morning to avoid the crowds.
Dress appropriately: Wear comfortable hiking shoes and dress in layers, as the weather can change quickly in the mountains. Bring a rain jacket, sunscreen, and a hat.
Bring plenty of water and snacks: The trail is steep and can be strenuous, so it’s important to stay hydrated and fueled.
*If your kids aren’t fond of hiking let your young kids bring their own hydration backpack and let them fill it with plenty of snacks they like (My kids thought this was the best thing ever and couldn’t wait to hike). When they get grumpy or frustrated on the trail let them rest and eat a snack.
Leave no trace: Hanging Lake is a fragile ecosystem, so it’s important to leave no trace behind. Pack out all trash and do not disturb the wildlife.
Take your time: The hike to Hanging Lake can be challenging, so take your time and enjoy the stunning scenery along the way. There are plenty of spots to take a break and rest if needed.
*We were in pretty good shape when we hiked this trail but when you are not acclimated to the high elevation and thin air, it seems like you are always out of breath which makes hiking extra challenging. Allow yourself plenty of time to hike.
Use caution on the trail: The trail to Hanging Lake can be steep and rocky in places. Use caution when hiking and watch your footing on the steep stairs and wooden bridges.
Hanging Lake may have closures due to several reasons such as:
Fires: The Grizzly Creek Fire in 2020 caused the closure of Hanging Lake due to concerns about the safety of visitors and the impact of the fire on the area.
Large mudslides: In 2019, a large mudslide occurred near the Hanging Lake trail, causing the closure of the trail for several months while crews worked to clear the debris and make repairs. Another mudslide happened a couple of days ago (May 3, 2023) blocking access to the trailhead.
Trail maintenance: Hanging Lake is a popular hiking destination, and the trail requires regular maintenance to ensure the safety of visitors and protect the fragile ecosystem. The trail may be closed periodically for maintenance work such as repairing the stairs or improving drainage.
It’s important to check the status of Hanging Lake before planning a trip to ensure that it is open and safe for visitors. The Hanging Lake permit website, U.S. Forest Service website, and social media accounts are good resources for the latest updates on closures and trail conditions.
By following these tips, you can have a safe and enjoyable hiking experience.
