What to Expect on Your Bridge Walk New River Gorge

What the 24" catwalk looks like during the bridge walk new river gorge

When you arrive at the Bridge Walk Headquarters, your guide will greet you and tell you where to wait. Once everyone for the tour has arrived, you’ll get your safety harness, and the guide will walk you through how to put it on correctly. Once everyone’s suited up, you’ll hop on a little white bus for a short ride to the north side of the bridge.

When the bus drops you off, you’ll walk down a short path that leads to a locked fence at the catwalk. Here, your guide will unlock the gate, and one by one, you’ll be secured to the catwalk’s safety cable. It’s important to be next to your group when this happens, as once you’re connected, there’s no changing positions along the way.

You’ll walk in single file along the 24″ wide catwalk, with your guide sharing all kinds of interesting facts about the bridge’s construction and history. I’m not usually into history, but learning about the building of the bridge was surprisingly fascinating.

There’s a spot where you can sit on the catwalk and dangle your feet over the edge. It was a blast! My group loved it—we sat there for a while, watching the whitewater rafters below. It’s definitely one of those picture-perfect moments, but be careful with your phone! I was so nervous about dropping my phone, I barely took any photos. They sell phone lanyards at the gift shop, but just a heads up—it blocked part of my camera lens. It didn’t work for me, but it worked for my daughter.

The Bridge Walk New River Gorge is easy to complete, thanks to the short path and secure cable system. Even if you’re not into heights, the safety harness and substantial railings make it feel more secure than you might expect.

We had a older couple in our tour group, and they did great!

Best Time to Visit the Bridge Walk New River Gorge

The Bridge Walk is available year-round, but I highly recommend visiting in the spring or fall. The weather is perfect for walking, and the scenery? Absolutely stunning, especially in the fall when the trees start to change colors.

If you happen to be in the area on the third Saturday of October, you’ll get to see one of the largest extreme sports events in the U.S.—BASE jumping from the top of the bridge during Bridge Day. Even if you’re just watching, it’s a sight you won’t forget.

Our guide said that on Bridge Day, base jumping from the bridge happens every 30 seconds. There are more than 400 base jumpers every year.
